As a devotee of Lodge cast iron pans, I’ve developed an increasing reputation for being knowledgeable about their use and care. In recent days, I’ve fielded an increasing number of questions from friends, family, and strangers asking if there was a cast iron pan starter kit that I would recommend. I was so excited this past weekend when two separate people asked me for my advice about cooking with cast iron pans.
I’m happy to share that this cast iron pan starter kit is based on my own experience of cooking on cast iron for the past three to four years.
Getting Started with Two Cast Iron Pans
For me, there really are two pans that I use all the time. These two pans offer a great range of cooking options for those just getting into cooking with cast iron. The skillet is great for stove-top use, roasting in the oven, and cooking on the grill.
Admittedly, the griddle is not quite as versatile, but it’s great for pancakes, french toast, fried eggs, grilled cheese sandwiches and more. The shallow depth of the griddle makes it a lot easier to flip whatever you’re cooking.
- 10.25″ Lodge Cast Iron Skillet, Pre-Seasoned and Ready for Stove Top or Oven Use
- 10.5″ Lodge Cast Iron Griddle. Pre-Seasoned Round Cast Iron Pan Perfect for Pancakes, Pizzas, and Quesadillas
As you can see in the photo at the top of this page, the two pans make a great team for making home made pizza – the skillet for Chicago-style deep dish, and the griddle for thin crust.
Easy-Care and Use Pan-Handle Holder
Cast iron pans are renown for their capacity to maintain a consistent, balanced heat. That’s wonderful for cooking, but a challenge when you’re trying to move the pan about. Using a little sleeve on the pan handle helps a lot when cooking on the stove-top.
Cast Iron Cleaning and Care Materials
While I’ve previously shared my process for cleaning cast iron pans, I find the following items to be essential for day-to-day care of my collection of cast iron
- Stainless Steel Chain Mail Scrubber – for getting baked on food off your pans
- Little glass bowl – for storing the chain mail scrubber next to the sink
- Cruet for Olive Oil – for quick and easy applications of olive oil after each washing
