As a designer and marketing consultant, I started using WordPress in March 2007. Search engine optimization for businesses was beginning to increase in importance and value. I googled my name and was disappointed when I didn’t appear until the third of fourth page of search results. Then and there I decided to launch a blog for myself.
It wasn’t until 2010 that I attended my first WordCamp. I attended WordCamp Philly and had a blast. I jumped into the WordPress community.
My Local WordPress Community
As of May 2024, I stepped down as the lead organizer of the Philly ‘burbs WordPress Meetup. Twelve years of leading that efforts seemed like enough.
WordCamps
WordCamps provided a wonderful vehicle for learning more about the software, for meeting new people within the community, for connecting with existing friends in the community, and for getting involved with and supporting the open source project.
WordCamps I Helped Organize
Working as an orgazing for my local WordCamps was a great way to give back to my local community, while also having a direct say in the shape, direction, and tone of those WordCamps.
- WordCamp Philly 2012, 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2018 (there was no WC Philly in 2013 due to a shift in venue, nor was there one in 2016 as WordCamp US was in Philly that year.)
- WordCamp US 2015 and 2016
WordCamps at which I’ve Volunteered
When looking to meet people in a new community, volunteering is a great way to get involved and meet people.

Presenting to Local WordPress Meetups
As a former local meetup organizer, I appreciate it can be a challenge to find local speakers to bring fresh ideas and perspectives to the group on a regular basis. As a way of giving back, I make it a point to deliver talks to the many WordPress meetups within driving distance of where I live.
